The Journey to Success: A Tale of Perseverance and Patience

My long-time friend, Ryan, who is the owner of Hambaobao, recently opened his own restaurant. He invited family and friends over last weekend to celebrate his successful opening.

I was fortunate to witness Ryan’s incredible restaurant journey from its humble beginnings in Beauty World Food Centre to where it is today.

The Journey Begins: Hambaobao in Beauty World Food Centre

In 2014, Ryan took a leap of faith and opened Hambaobao in Beauty World Food Centre. At the tender age of 25, he embarked on this journey without any prior experience or connections in the F&B industry. It was a risky decision, but Ryan was determined to succeed. Over the next seven years, he experimented with different burger recipes, slowly building a loyal customer base and perfecting his craft.

The Growth: From a Food Stall to a Restaurant

Fast forward to today, he has his own restaurant space. 4 staff under his care. A menu that sells. And a future that is bright.

It’s easy to be in awe at his present-day success, and rightly so. But what most people often overlook is the hard work, perseverance, and patience of 7 years that got him there.

The Lesson: Great Things Take Time

In life, we often seek instant gratification. We want things to happen quickly, and when they don’t, we become impatient. However, the most rewarding things in life often take time to achieve. This is a universal truth that applies to all aspects of life, from nature to personal achievements and business success.

His journey reminds me of an important life lesson, which is: Great Things Take Time

  • A baby takes 9 months to be fully formed.
  • Durian trees take 5-8 years to bear their first fruit.
  • Compounding interest starts to take off around the 7-8 year.

This is just the way things are.

In the context of business, this lesson is particularly relevant. Building a successful business from scratch is not an overnight process. It requires a combination of hard work, perseverance, patience, and time. It involves setting a solid foundation, constantly learning and adapting, making mistakes and learning from them, and slowly but steadily growing your customer base and reputation.

Ryan’s journey with Hambaobao is a perfect embodiment of this lesson. When he first started his food stall in Beauty World Food Centre, he was a young 25-year-old with no prior experience in the F&B industry. He took a risk, stepped out of his comfort zone, and embarked on an uncertain journey. Over the next seven years, he experimented with his burger recipes, learned from his mistakes, adapted to the market’s needs, and slowly but surely built a loyal customer base. His journey was not easy, and it was filled with challenges and setbacks. But he persevered, remained patient, and never gave up.

Stay Positive and Never Give Up

So, if you’re feeling discouraged…

Here’s a good reminder that great things take time. As we approach the final quarter of 2021, you may be feeling discouraged about your current situation. If it’s of any comfort, it took Ryan 7 years to get from being in a hawker centre to having his own restaurant space.

Great things happen when you stay positive and decide to never give up!

Here’s to your success,

– Ben

About Hambaobao
I’ve known Ryan for the better part of sixteen years. He and Clare are the least pretentious people you’ll meet – what you see is what you get. I’m obviously not a food critic, but if you are looking at having a decent burger at affordable prices.

You can check out their Facebook page here!
